A report released by Ofcom reveals that UK adults have spent around a third of their waking hours consuming online content over the past year!
Ofcom’s Group Director of Research, Yih-Choung Teh, attributes much of this to Covid restrictions, saying “TV and online video have proved an important antidote to lockdown life”, and noting that streaming services have “turbo-charged” as over half of homes are now signed up to at least one streaming service.
Households are now primarily choosing on-demand services, such as Netflix and Disney+, over terrestrial television, with viewing figures for traditional broadcast media primarily driven by the over-45’s, and falling among the 16-30 age group (based on 2019 statistics).
The Media Nations Report highlights the increasing demand households are placing on a secure, stable broadband connection: with our viewing habits driven ever more by what we want to watch, rather than what happens to be on TV at the time, a fast internet connection – rather than a satellite dish or television aerial – is now a higher priority for many UK homeowners.
